About Jyotirao Phule:

  • Born in 1827 in Satara district of Maharashtra.
  • Phule was given the title of Mahatma on May 11, 1888, by Vithalrao Krishnaji Vandekar, a Maharashtrian social activist.
Social reforms and key contributions:
  • His work focuses on the abolition of untouchability and the caste system, women’s emancipation and empowerment, and Hindu family reform.
  • He is considered a pioneer of women’s education in India, alongside his wife, Savitribai Phule.
  • In August 1848, the pair became the first native Indians to launch India’s first indigenously maintained school for females in Pune, Maharashtra.
  • The Phules later established schools for youngsters from the then-untouchable castes of Mahar and Mang.
  • He established a home for pregnant Brahmin widows to give birth in a safe and secure environment in 1863.
  • To avoid infanticide, he founded an orphanage. He is thought to be the first Hindu to establish an orphanage for underprivileged children in this regard.
  • Jyotirao decided to build a common swimming pool outside his house in 1868 to demonstrate his welcoming attitude toward all human beings and his desire to dine with anyone, regardless of caste.
  • Phule formed the Satyashodhak Samaj, or Society of Seekers of Truth, in 1873 to fight for the rights of the poor, to end the caste system, and to promote rational thought.
